Selkirk Rex: The Charming “Cat in Sheep’s Clothing”

Breed History

The Selkirk Rex is a unique breed born from a spontaneous genetic mutation. The first of the breed, a kitten named Miss DePesto, was born in 1987 in Montana, USA. A local Persian breeder, Jeri Newman, noticed the kitten's unusual curly coat and decided to develop a new breed.

Appearance

The Selkirk Rex is affectionately known as the "cat in sheep's clothing" due to its plush and curly coat. This is the breed's defining characteristic, with both longhair and shorthair Selkirks possessing this distinctive curly hair, even including the whiskers!

The breed is medium to large in size with a muscular and well-boned body. They have a round head with full cheeks, medium-sized ears, and large, round eyes that can be any color.

Character

Selkirk Rex cats are known for their calm, easygoing temperament. They are extremely patient, making them a fantastic choice for families with children. They are also known to get along well with other pets.

These cats are also notably playful and enjoy interaction with their human family members. Despite their laid-back nature, they still enjoy a good play session and will appreciate a variety of toys.

Selkirk Rex Care

One of the primary aspects of caring for a Selkirk Rex is maintaining their unique coat. While their fur does not mat as easily as some other breeds, they still require regular grooming to keep their coat looking its best.

The Selkirk Rex is generally a healthy breed, but like all cats, they benefit from regular veterinary check-ups. They should be fed a balanced diet and given plenty of exercises to keep them at a healthy weight.
